PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING A PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX
INCREASE
The City of Wadley today announces its intention to increase the 2026 property taxes it will levy this year by
9.28 percent over the rollback millage rate.
Each year, the board of tax assessors is required to review the assessed value for property tax purposes of
taxable property in the county. When the trend of prices on properties that have recently sold in the county
indicates there has been an increase in the fair market value of any specific property, the board of tax
assessors is required by law to re-determine the value of such property and adjust the assessment. This is
called a reassessment.
When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires a rollback millage rate to be
computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate
would have produced had no reassessments occurred.
For 2026, the City’s state-required PT-32.1 calculation includes $138,525.19 in PTRLOST/FLOST property-
tax-relief proceeds and results in a final rollback millage rate of 13.269 mills. The City is proposing a millage
rate of 14.500 mills. Although the proposed 14.500 rate is lower than the 2025 rate of 15.564 mills, Georgia
law measures the advertised tax increase against the 13.269 rollback rate.
The City’s FY 2026 budget anticipated $950,000 in ad valorem tax revenue. At 14.500 mills, the final 2026
digest produces an estimated gross M&O property tax levy of approximately $930,887. Because the
proposed rate is higher than the rollback millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held
before the City may set the final millage rate so the public has an opportunity to express its opinions on the
increase.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at Wadley City Hall, 37
Butts Street, Wadley, Georgia 30477 on September 1, 2026 at 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m., and on September
10, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
